Group of women competing for the Triathlon Olympic gold medal at Copacabana Beach. Peloton cycling and headed by Flora Duffy.
Warm winter days, the Summer Olympics is actually taking place during the winter in Brazil. Strenuous course, high humidity and 27 deg C (81 F) – typical Weather in Rio for this time of the year (August). Whoever adapts quicker to the local weather conditions and food have an advantage over the competition.
Triathlon is a sport few cariocas practice as it depends on relatively high investments to buy and maintain a 1st class road bicycle. Import tax is hefty and few (if no) 1st class competition bicycle parts are produced locally in Brazil.
The Brazilian taxation system makes imported sporting equipment unaffordable for great majority of the population; therefore it works against the identification and formation of new world class athletes.
No wonder why Brazil is known for football… As all we need to play it is a ball and a pair of flip flops to mark the goal posts.
