Crude, oil product carriers as well as LNG ships are usual sights at Guanabara Bay, sharing the waters with fishermen, ferries, leisure and competition boats.
Their constant presence is explained by Petrobras’ numerous facilities on the back of the Guanabara Bay. Refineries, tanking terminals and gasification facilities are among the assets owned and operated by the oil company.
In order to reach the Petrobras facilities these oil ships pass underneath the bridge’s central span (vão central), which is at its highest point 72m from the surface of the water.
