Three Marines heavily armed dressed on camouflage standing at a street Downtown Rio de Janeiro looking suspicious at the smartphone (camera).
Armed forces were deployed on the streets during the Olympics. The threat of terrorism and the quantity of tourists flooding Rio plus delegations of athletes from all over the world are a mix never heard of in Brazil. Outstanding times require outstanding measures.
Many people never felt so safe walking on the streets of Rio but on the other hand many others feel intimidated by the high caliber weapons.
The bill goes to the federal government, which is paying around 24M USD so that the armed forces meet the security needs Rio has been lacking during the recent years (just for the Olympics). Once the games are over, the state population will again likely fall in despair with high criminality rates and undermanned police forces.
Hopefully the new “Centro Presente” will help here…
