Bermuda sailor Ceci Wollmann sailing away from Marina da Glória for another practicing session on the Guanabara Bay. Preps for the Olympics, which are coming up real soon!
Expensive Yachts, Rio de Janeiro skyline and the monument for ‘Pracinhas’ on the background.
Weeks before the Olympics and lots of test events are happening around the city, including out at the bay. Olympians are all over the city and the atmosphere is great. One people, one goal!
The Guanabara Bay: Although the media keeps reporting how polluted the bay is and highlighting that floating debris may be one of the challenges for the athletes out on the water*, floating pollution is not as widespread as some may think. Debris get localized in pockets (like floating islands of garbage), which, depending on currents, the tides and wind, float randomly and accumulate in specific points of the bay.
*The other day we got to hear of a fridge floating about! http://g1.globo.com/hora1/noticia/2016/07/limpeza-da-baia-de-guanabara-corre-contra-o-tempo-para-receber-regatas.html
Anyhow, it is a pity to see the pollution, read the reports on the news and hear from the previous generations (now about 50+ years old) how clean the waters used to be when they were kids, how much more enjoyable the beaches along the shore of the Guanabara Bay were.
Hope for the best but prepare for the worst!
