Access overpass to Rio-Niterói Bridge, 16T port knuckle crane and, on the background, new high rise building in Porto Maravilha area.
The area of the consortium Porto Maravilha is under intense gentrification. Most of the poor families that live and work in the port area are being relocated to suburban locations. Their simple habitations are giving place to expensive properties, high rises owned by people that belong to upper classes and have no history or association with the port area.
Urban regeneration is being oriented by the capitalism. It is authoritarian because it does not meet the basic needs of the local population. The government offers public subsidies, tax breaks, infrastructure and legislation flexibility leading to speculation.
Local cityscape is under transformation, attracting investors and tourists, but we shall not forget the people that’s suffering with the relocation and the origins of the area.
