Three men painting the metal railings of an overpass to access Maracanã stadium – 2 days before the 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremony.
Last minute arrangements, last minute touch-ups! Although the railing got painted on time, lots more that were meant to be ready before the start of the Olympic Games did not get 100% completed. Of course, whatever was not completed will not influence the progress of the events. Things will go ahead and the Olympics will be a success (surrounded by reports here and there of incomplete works).
24h working calendar adopted to get all ready for the games, extra cost to keep productivity during the night time. All will pay off during the events – but will help in blowing the budget with last minute works that could have been done cheaper in advance if planning was more detailed.
Talking with other cariocas, there is a fear that the final details and some of the major infrastructure works that were meant to be ready already may never be finished. The local Government in Rio and the city have overspent quite considerably in 2016. In addition to this, to make things worse, maintaining the Olympic venues will impose an extra expenditure for all future governments to come.
The near future will be all about prioritizing investments, with reduced income from oil and gas and extra olympic related expenses, the government will have no money for “nice to haves” – hopefully there will be enough for education and the health system.
